n8n vs Make vs Zapier vs Custom Code: Choosing an Automation Platform
A vendor-neutral guide to choosing between n8n, Make, Zapier and custom code for AI automation — based on volume, data sensitivity, complexity and skills.
One of the first practical questions in any automation program is where the workflows should live. There is no single right answer — the best platform depends on what you are automating, how much data flows through it, how sensitive that data is and who will maintain it. This is the framework we use as a vendor-neutral partner.
The four options
Zapier
The easiest place to start, with a huge catalog of connectors and a gentle learning curve. Well suited to straightforward, lower-volume workflows owned by business teams. Costs can climb with volume, and complex branching becomes hard to manage.
Make
A visual builder with more control over data mapping, routing and error handling than simpler tools. Good for moderately complex workflows maintained by operations or analyst teams.
n8n
A workflow platform that can be cloud-hosted or self-hosted, with strong support for code steps and AI agent nodes. Attractive when data residency, cost at volume or technical flexibility matter. Self-hosting brings maintenance responsibility.
Custom code
Services written in Python or TypeScript, deployed on your infrastructure. The most control over performance, security, testing and cost at scale — and the highest need for engineering skills to maintain.
Five questions that decide it
- Volume: how many runs per day, and how will pricing scale?
- Data sensitivity: can the data pass through a third-party cloud, and in which region?
- Complexity: how much branching, looping, error handling and AI reasoning is involved?
- Ownership: who will maintain the workflows — a business team, analysts or engineers?
- Integration depth: do the required connectors exist, or will you need custom API work?
A common, sensible mix
Many organizations end up with more than one: a no-code tool for simple departmental automations, a more technical platform or custom services for core, high-volume or sensitive processes, and clear standards for monitoring and documentation across both. What matters most is that every automation has an owner, alerts and documentation.
